Jenna Bush Hager remembers the day her husband proposed to her like it was yesterday. Well, most of it, at least.
The Today host dished on her husband’s proposal while chatting with Hoda Kotb on Wednesday’s (June 12) broadcast, though some of the details were a bit murky.
“The weekend before Henry proposed to me, we were at a friend’s wedding in Maine and I caught the bouquet,” she recalled. “I think the friend was like, ‘Who’s next? You.’ And I think Henry was okay with it because he had a ring at that point.”
She then told Kotb that her twin sister, Barbara, knew that the proposal was going to happen as soon as he had asked her for Jenna’s hand in marriage before asking their parents.
“He asked Barbara first and then he asked my parents,” she said, shocking Kotb. She then questioned whether that was completely true, adding, “I’m pretty sure Barbara knew first but we would need her to call in [to Today] and she has a job.” She later joked that they also can’t call Henry to clear up their confusion because he was at physical therapy.
But Bush Hager maintained that she didn’t know the proposal was coming when it did.
“I have a theory that anybody that’s about to be engaged acts on their worst behavior in the days leading up,” she said. “We were on a roadtrip and I’d call being like, ‘It’s hot and I’m tired and I want to come home.’”
She told Kotb that her twin sister became convinced that he was going to back out of proposing that weekend because of it.
Bush Hager and her husband have been married for 20 years now and share three children.
